Flatlands is a journal of creative writing currently under development in Brandon, Manitoba.
The guiding premise for Flatlands is twofold: 1) to provide a medium for prairie based writers, thinkers and artists. This includes those established, emerging, or previously undiscovered. 2) To act as a magnet in attracting submissions from a wider pool for contribution to the prairie arts community.
Thematically, Flatlands seeks to illuminate what is near and invites views from beyond the horizon. It will contain considerable doses of prairie culture, lore, thought and idiosyncrasies, portrayed in a creative, sophisticated and provocative fashion, as well as engaging topics of broader interest from a wider national and international perspective.
Flatlands resonates with a curious mixture of openness, independence, creativity and shared values, and embodies the effort to construct and promote ideas of worth in what is at once bitter, inhospitable and famously fertile territory.
